Caticures To Go

Purrfect Playlist: Music Just for Cats

Whether you’re looking to soothe an anxious cat’s behavior, or simply enrich their environment, music made just for cats could be just the thing.

Composed with specific frequencies and rhythms that mimic natural cat sounds, the music is designed to reduce stress, improve their mood (yes, they have moods just like people), and relieve anxiety and/or pain.

I often recommend to clients they play music as part of the preparation before I arrive for my at-home grooming appointment as it can make a big difference in the success of a grooming.

First, let’s talk science

You may think music you like is good for them too, but research shows that isn’t true.

According to this PBS article some music can be harmful to your cat’s ears and well-being.

Music that is closely tied to their natural communication (such as purring or suckling), is the best match for your cat’s nervous system.

Research shows that frequencies between 20-150Hz are reminiscent of purring and when combined with 60-80 BPM (beats per minute) make the purrfect combination of soothing sounds.

David Tele, a researcher, found that scientific theory on the fundamental nature of music appreciation. He contends that every species has an intuitive biological response to sounds based on their brain development and inherent natural vocalizations.

Further, a study was conducted at the Louisiana State University School of Veterinary Medicine that was published in the Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery in 2019 where the authors state: “We conclude that cat-specific music may benefit cats by decreasing the stress levels and increasing the quality of care in veterinary clinical settings.”

Where to find music just for cats

Luckily, there are now many sources dedicated to music for our furry felines. It’s become so popular that some of them have millions of followers. If you work from home like I do, I actually find the music soothing as well.
