Pre-appointment Preparation

How can I prepare my cat for their nail trim appointment?

Not typically, no. However, if your cat is overly anxious or has scratched/bitten in the past, then you may want to consider giving them a prescription dose of Gabapentin. (Your veterinarian will prescribe this and be sure to follow their dosing recommendation.)

There are also holistic remedies such as Rescue Remedy that helps cats relax and take the edge off so they are more comfortable.

Yes. We have cat clients that are FIV+ and so long as they are not reactive/fractious, their nail care is handled no differently.

General Cat Nail Care

Why should I get my cat’s nails trimmed?

Trimming helps prevent painful overgrowth and possible infections; nail trimming reduces accidental scratches; protects furniture, and you and your family members’ skin. This is especially important if you have young children and/or other pets.

Most cats need a trim every 4–6 weeks, depending on how fast their nails grow and how much they scratch naturally. Having a cat scratcher (or two) is helpful for them to satisfy their natural instincts and helps them shed their nail sheaths.

Yes. Indoor cats don’t wear down their nails as much as outdoor cats, so trimming is especially important.

Kittens as young as 8 weeks old can get their nails trimmed. Early handling helps kittens get used to having their paws touched making their grooming a lifelong pleasant experience.

Senior cats (typically defined as between 7 and 11 years old) and super-senior cats (12 years old and older) can require more frequent nail trims because as they age, their ability to use a scratching post can be limited and their nails often get thicker with age. It is important not to allow their nails to get too long as this can cause an infection if they grow into the paw pads.
